چکیده

We present a semi-empirical model for the infrared emission of dust around star-forming sites in galaxies. Our approach combines a simple model of radiative transfer in dust clouds with a state-of-the-art model of the microscopic optical properties of dust grains pioneered by Draine & Li. In combination with the STARBURST99 stellar spectral synthesis package, this framework is able to produce synthetic spectra for galaxies which extend from the Lyman limit through to the far-infrared. We use it to probe how model galaxy spectra depend upon the physical characteristics of their dust grain populations, and upon the energy sources which heat that dust. We compare the predictions of our model with the 8and 24-μm luminosities of sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey, and conclude by using the models to analyse the relative merits of various colour diagnostics in distinguishing systems out to a redshift of 2 with ongoing star formation from those with only old stellar populations.

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY

A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...

The Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Normal Star-Forming Galaxies

We present a new phenomenological model for the spectral energy distribution of normal star-forming galaxies between 3 and 1100 μm. A sequence of realistic galaxy spectra are constructed from a family of dust emission curves assuming a power law distribution of dust mass over a wide range of interstellar radiation fields. For each interstellar radiation field heating intensity we combine emissi...

A new empirical method of estimation of the far-infrared flux of galaxies

We propose a new empirical method to estimate the total far-infrared flux of galaxies from the spectral energy distribution (SED) at wavelengths λ≤ 100μm. It is difficult to derive the total far-infrared luminosity from only the IRAS data, though it is one of the most important properties of galaxies. Observations by Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) indicate that the SED of the diffuse emissi...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

A simple model to interpret the ultraviolet, optical and infrared emission from galaxies

We present a simple, largely empirical but physically motivated model to interpret the midand far-infrared spectral energy distributions of galaxies consistently with the emission at ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Our model relies on an existing angle-averaged prescription to compute the absorption of starlight by dust in stellar birth clouds and in the ambient interstellar...
